We are pleased and extremely proud to announce that we are Finalists in the HSJ Partnership Awards 2022 in the category, Best Not-For-Profit Working in Partnership with the NHS. We were selected for our Step-Down Homeless Medical Care Pathway which was introduced in 2020.
Mildmay Hospital is the first specialist unit to provide step-down care for the homeless population of London, addressing a huge unmet need for specialised medical care following treatment in an NHS hospital/acute centre.
This service provides rehabilitative healthcare for people who are homeless or rough-sleeping and recuperating from illness or injury. It employs the medical leadership and personalised treatment and care provided by our multidisciplinary team to alleviate the burden on NHS hospitals.
Throughout the Covid-19 crisis, it has become clearer than ever that to achieve its goals, the NHS must closely collaborate with the myriad of public, private and third sector organisations that make up the healthcare sector, to improve and save the lives of patients.
Partnerships between the third sector and NHS organisations are almost as old as the NHS itself. Volunteering and fundraising are very much part of the altruistic nature of many who want to support the NHS. However, many charities also provide much-needed services which the NHS can’t necessarily provide on its own. This award has been designed to recognise the valuable contribution that this sector plays in helping the NHS deliver services.
Despite the demanding circumstances of the past 2 years, over 190 entries were received for this year’s HSJ Partnership Awards, with a number of these projects making it to the final shortlist. The volume and standards of applications have been a true testament to those health and social care staff, who continue to push outstanding work and transformational projects across the sector.
Judges looked for examples of services that have been provided to an NHS organisation which they wouldn’t ordinarily be able to provide. Special consideration was given to innovative, ground break projects which have improved the outcomes for patients, staff and their environments.
The judging panel was once again made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community, including Dr Matt Aiello (National Programmes Lead, Education Reform, Health Education England); Dr Elena Bechberger (National Programme Director – LVHC Programme, NHS England and NHS Improvement); Claire Igoe (Head of Environmental Sustainability – Manchester University FT) and Vince Thomas (Director of Nursing and Quality, NHS England and NHS Improvement).
Following the intense and in-depth judging process, Mildmay was selected ahead of the official awards ceremony to be held in March 2022.
