We're very pleased to announce the August/September 2026 MVP Award winner: Pillay, our hospital chef!

"Pillay consistently ensures that every meal is enjoyable. Food plays a vital role in the comfort of our patients and the morale of our staff."

At Mildmay, meals are much more than part of the daily routine. Many of our patients come to us after long periods of illness, time on acute hospital wards or experience of homelessness, and good food is part of their recovery, as well as a moment of comfort in the day. Pillay has been part of the Mildmay team for four years, cooking for patients and staff every day. The kitchen works closely with our dietitian, including preparing texture-modified meals for patients with swallowing difficulties.

Pillay has also been part of our work on a low-carbon hospital menu. It began with a tasting session in October 2024, where staff and patients sampled new dishes chosen for their nutritional value, ease of eating and carbon impact, and it supports the NHS ambition for a net zero health service by 2040. You can read more on our Dietetics page.

Geoff, our CEO, presented Pillay with the MVP gift voucher in the hospital kitchen, right in the middle of food prep.

Well done to Pillay, and to all the nominees who were recognised by their peers for their fantastic work at Mildmay.

Mildmay's MVP Awards

The MVP Awards at Mildmay Hospital were created by one of our former physiotherapists, Josh Pedro, to highlight the remarkable contributions our staff make every day, often unnoticed. In charge of the nominations now is our Lead Physio, Asterios.

The award is a bi-monthly, staff-led initiative. Everyone at Mildmay, across clinical, non-clinical and support roles, can nominate and vote for their colleagues.

What is an MVP?

In sport, MVP stands for "Most Valuable Player": the person whose contribution stands out. At Mildmay, it is our outstanding team member, chosen not by management but by their peers.
