At the end of 2024, Mildmay Hospital’s Dietetics team made significant contributions to the British Dietetic Association (BDA) Research Symposium in Birmingham.

Demonstrating our ongoing commitment to evidence-based practice, sustainability, and patient-centred care, four research abstracts developed by Mildmay dietitians, students, and academic collaborators were accepted for presentation. With over 100 submissions, the Symposium highlighted the scale and depth of research shaping the future of dietetic practice.

Award for Sustainable Menu Research

Congratulations go to Tioluwani Ajao, a student from King's College London on placement at Mildmay, who received the 'Best Abstract' award in the Service Evaluation Stream for her abstract which evaluated a low-carbon menu within a rehabilitation hospital setting, This recognition underscores Mildmay's efforts to integrate environmental sustainability with patient care strategies.

Research Presented

Other accepted abstracts highlighted diverse areas of the team's research. These included an examination of weight change and length of stay among patients living with HIV at a rehabilitation centre, and a cross-sectional survey on patient understanding and opinions regarding sustainability within a hospital context.

Mildmay Dietitian Kattya Mayre-Chilton also presented findings on NHS employees' practices of food sustainability in both work and home environments.

A Productive Research Year in 2024

The BDA Symposium formed part of a productive year for Mildmay's Dietetics research. Other key milestones in 2024 included:

  • Presentation of their "low-carbon emission menu" project at the 19th International Congress of Nutrition and Dietetics (ICND2024) in Toronto, Canada.

  • Coverage in BDA press during Sustainable September.

  • Inclusion of their work in an NHS England case study.

  • Publication of an article, "Implementing Sustainable Dietetic Menus in Practice," in the Complete Nutrition magazine.

This body of work underscores the team's commitment to advancing dietetic practice through rigorous research. It has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of Mildmay's Dietetics team, wider Mildmay colleagues, and external partners from NHS England and various universities.
