Dietetics & Nutritional Sciences International Internships

International Dietetic and Nutrition internships at Mildmay

Through an established partnership with NOVA Medical School, Lisbon, Mildmay Hospital welcomes final-year students for intensive internships as part of their Nutritional Sciences degree.

The programme offers hands-on experience within a specialist HIV and complex rehabilitation setting, where students work alongside our multidisciplinary team and contribute to meaningful clinical projects. In doing so, the placements enrich our practice while supporting the development of thoughtful, evidence-informed healthcare professionals.

"I would like to thank everyone at Mildmay Hospital for welcoming the students and for all their help and support to realise their projects.

I would also like to thank Professor Filomena Gomes of Nova Medical School, Lisbon, for reaching out to us to support the development of future healthcare professionals, and Professor Marta Silvestre, who oversees the internship programme at NOVA."

2026

In 2026, we welcomed Marta Bastos, Mafalda Martins, Mariana Silva and Mariana Veiga to Mildmay as part of our ongoing international internship programme in partnership with NOVA Medical School.

The students undertook a project focused on sleep, an essential component of recovery and overall quality of life. Given the complexity of cases treated at Mildmay, sleep disturbance is a frequent concern among patients. They were challenged to explore whether simple nutritional approaches could support improved sleep as a complementary option within patients’ routines.

The group conducted a literature review examining foodstuffs and drinks associated with sleep support. While strong clinical evidence remains limited, they identified emerging findings and translated these into accessible patient information leaflets. Patients were invited to try the suggested drinks before bedtime and to complete feedback forms assessing sleep quality, palatability and perceived benefit.

The project combined research, patient engagement and practical implementation, reflecting the multidisciplinary and person-centred ethos of care at Mildmay. It also offered the students valuable experience of clinical nutrition within a specialist rehabilitation setting.

"My internship at Mildmay Mission Hospital was an extremely rewarding experience, and I would like to express my deepest gratitude both for this incredible opportunity and to Professor Filomena Gomes whose support and encouragement made this experience possible.

I also want to add a very special thank you to Dr. Kattya Mayre-Chilton for her kindness, guidance, and dedication to ensuring that we made the most of this experience. Her passion for patient care and commitment to teaching were truly inspiring. I am also grateful to the entire team for welcoming us with such warmth and making us feel like part of the hospital.

During the internship, I was able to engage with patients, be part of the multidisciplinary team, learn many different procedures, and contribute to meaningful projects. Because of how I was able to work in a hospital setting and immerse myself in a different healthcare reality, I believe these experiences had a huge positive impact on my growth and helped me broaden my perspective of nutrition’s role in patient care.

This experience will remain a defining moment in my academic and professional journey, and I can confidently say it reinforced my passion for nutrition and strengthened my skills as a future healthcare professional and dietitian.

Thank you once again to everyone who made this possible!"

Lucileine Santos

"Before starting my internship at Mildmay Mission Hospital, I expected to gain a deeper understanding of dietetics in the context of managing complex health conditions, particularly for patients living with HIV. However, my experience here has exceeded all expectations.

Throughout my time as a dietetic student, I had the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated team of professionals, where I not only applied theoretical knowledge but also learned practical skills in clinical nutrition, patient assessment, and care planning.

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the entire team working together, supporting each other, and exemplifying the power of multidisciplinary collaboration in providing the best care for patients.

I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a compassionate and holistic healthcare environment. I’ve learned so much from the team, and this experience has truly reinforced my passion for dietetics. I’m thankful for the support and knowledge shared with me during my time here at Mildmay, and I will carry these lessons with me throughout my career.

"From February 4th to February 13th, 2025, I had one of the most distinctive experiences of my bachelor's degree in Nutritional Sciences: a nine-day internship at the Mildmay Mission Hospital in London.

Being a 4th-year student getting closer to finishing my degree, being in contact with the reality of the profession is crucial, not only as part of my learning process but also as a way of confirming my fields and areas of interest, mainly clinical nutrition in a hospital context.

This internship enabled me to put into practice and further the theoretical knowledge obtained during my degree, mostly because the realities of the patients admitted at Mildmay are not fully discussed and are not part of our curricular plan. During my stay, I was able to do consultations with admitted patients, shadow the incredible work of Dr Kattya on-site and work on a group project auditing clinical records on relevant nutritional parameters. With this, I can surely say that I expanded my horizons of scientific knowledge, developed critical thinking and learned a lot about work ethics and teamwork. I understood that the multidisciplinary work and expertise at Mildmay are of great value and an essential part of the clinical intervention. Moreover, in the social and interpersonal relationships domain, being in direct contact with patients from different upbringings and realities, was also a paramount and distinctive factor of this internship.

Regarding the people that I met along the way, I could not be more grateful for the warm welcome, the help and kindness showed at all times.

While it was a learning experience, there was also time to explore the enchanting city that welcomed us and to learn more about its history, culture, and traditions. Alongside my colleagues, even with the cold outside and the foggy weather, I had the opportunity to visit different neighbourhoods and markets, attend a musical, try local foods and stroll around the city.

Before I went, I had high expectations, but they were definitely exceeded!"

Catarina Brás

"During February, two of my university colleagues (who are also good friends) and I had the incredible opportunity to complete a curricular internship at Mildmay Mission Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Kattya Mayre-Chilton.

The collaboration between Nova Medical School and Mildmay Hospital provides this unique learning experience to students, allowing me to develop new skills, grow as a dietetics student, and better prepare for the challenges of the profession.

During my time at Mildmay Hospital, I had the opportunity to engage with the English healthcare system, observe a multidisciplinary team and the different perspectives on patient care, develop my knowledge of MUST Screening, and closely follow the remarkable work of Dr. Kattya Mayre-Chilton.

Mildmay is a truly special and distinctive hospital, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from all those who work there and welcomed me with a smile. Thank you so much for this incredible experience!"

"Our internship was very enriching. It allowed us as students to get to know a different reality in a different country and where there is an adjustment of priorities taking into account the existing context. We had the opportunity to learn from a very dedicated multidisciplinary team, which despite the existing adversities, strives to provide the best possible health care. This internship marked my academic career and will certainly contribute to my future as a health professional."

Ines Timóteo

"In this report, I would like to personally thank Dr Kattya for all her generosity and for making us feel so welcome and useful to improve the service at Mildmay Mission Hospital, as well as for the opportunity to be faced with different realities from those in Portugal.

I would also like to thank George for making us feel at home and always having friendly and comforting words to give us.

To all the staff who made this project possible, including the interns Amanda and James, without whom it would not have been possible to develop this project.

Matilde Silva

I would like to personally thank Dr Kattya for having us at Mildmay for this great experience and for being always extremely kind and helpful.

I would also like to thank the catering staff for being receptive and helping us collect the necessary data for our project. The health technicians in both wards, James, Marcelina, Ian and George were impeccable and very supportive during this week.

I especially enjoyed this internship because I had the opportunity to have close contact with the patients, to be able to talk to them and understand how important proper nutrition is for their rehabilitation, health and well-being."

Ana Sofia

"I would like to personally thank Dr Kattya for having us at Mildmay Mission Hospital and for being extremely kind and helpful. This internship gave me the possibility to have close contact with the patients, as well as an experience in a different reality than the one that we are used to in Portugal. Also, George welcomed us in such a warm way that we can´t explain and gave us the best suggestions of places, activities and restaurants in London. All the other staff members, and our internship colleagues, Marcelina and James, thank you all! Mildmay Mission Hospital will always be in my heart for the unique experience and lovely people!"

Katarina Sintra Serralha

"I would like to leave a very special thank you to Dr Kattya Mayre-Chilton for receiving me and my colleagues at Mildmay Mission Hospital and always making us feel welcomed and truly part of the team. There was always a kind word for us, and she was always available for anything we may need. I appreciated all the effort to always teach us something new every day. Above all else, I learned that as a dietitian, I can truly make an impact on people’s lives. Dr. Kattya truly inspired me to be a better professional and a better human being through my work.

I also appreciated every member of the team, specially Shalma, who was always available to find solutions to our problems, and Ian, who always greeted us with a smile.

Throughout this week of the internship, I had the chance to get in contact with patients in a reality that is completely different from mine. I could do a MUST screening, catering, data collection, and a variety of other tasks that I could see would make an impact on the hospital, which made me feel valued. Overall, it was, without a doubt, an experience that leaves a special mark on my heart and my academic and future professional career."

Joana

"I am deeply grateful for how Mildmay Mission Hospital welcomed us, the friendliness of the staff, and the opportunity they have provided me with.

Especially, I am incredibly grateful to Dr Kattya Mayre-Chilton, for receiving me and my colleagues in the best way possible and for her invaluable guidance and support throughout the internship. She provided me with clear direction and expectations about my project and was always available to answer my questions and provide valuable feedback. In addition to the project, Dr Kattya Mayre-Chilton allowed me to attend her clinical practice through shadowing, which contributed even more to my learning. Throughout the internship, Dr Amanda Comer, the Speech and Language Therapist, provided me with valuable insights and guidance that helped me to develop my internship project, for which I thank you."

Beatriz Martins Coelho

After finishing this internship, there is a feeling of excitement because we experienced a very different reality and, on the other hand, a feeling that it was a short period to have a full experience at this hospital. I think that seeing another way of work and attending a Multidisciplinary Team meeting was incredible in expanding horizons and bringing more knowledge and ideas to the Portuguese Health System.

Being with Kattya doing the MUST screen for the first time, shadowing in patient meetings, seeing her talking with the patients, and learning about this relationship between a patient and a health professional made me feel like a part of that team during the week. We tried to help as much as possible with our projects by trying to help serve the food and show more consistent organisation at lunchtime, which made me feel even more involved.

Thank you for this opportunity!"

Alexandre Alves Rodrigues

"Firstly, we would like to express our thanks to Mildmay Mission Hospital, and in particular the dietitian Kattya Mayre-Chilton, for providing us with this unique internship opportunity.

We were privileged to learn about work culture and develop our professional and personal skills through this experience. Certainly, an experience we will not forget. Thank you!"

Margarida Silva and Matilde Pereira

"We are grateful for the support of Dr Katya and the whole team that welcomed us and allowed us to have a complete and dynamic internship with the possibility of interaction with the patients and the team.

We are also grateful for allowing us to attend a Multidisciplinary Team meeting where everyone is equal and everyone values each other. We felt that the projects had the goal of making improvements that Dr Kattya thought necessary/possible. We felt privileged to bear the responsibility to understand and make improvements in the sectors in question, being able to follow the process from the beginning to the end.

We consider it to be an added value to our training and an unforgettable experience. Last but not least, we would like to thank Prof Filomena Gomes, who was able to pass on her experience to us and allowed us to arrange an international internship so that we could have an experience of our own."
